HEAD START MISSION STATEMENT

To support children and families in realizing their potential

by providing quality programs in partnership with our communities.

Early Head Start

The Early Head Start Vision is to provide early continuous, and comprehensive child development and family support services to families with children under the age of three and pregnant women. The services provided include home visits, center-based parent and child activities, development of family/individual goals, parenting classes, access to community services and resources, and center based child care.

Head Start

The Head Start Program serves children ages 3 to 5 years old in Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac Counties. Children must obtain the age of 3 on or before December 1 of the program year. Various options of service are provided to children and families such as;

  • parent workshops

  • volunteer opportunities

  • nutrition services

  • medical and dental referrals

  • immunization information

  • meals/snacks

  • child care during program activities,

  • transportation (in selected areas)

  • social experiences for children and families

  • and field trips

The program operates from September through May.

**Eligibility for both the Early Head Start and Head Start programs are based on income. 10% of enrollment is for children with disabilities.

Michigan School Readiness Program

The Michigan School Readiness Program provides services to children 4 years old. The child must turn 4 on or before December 1 of the program year. Applicants must meet two risk factors established by the Michigan Department of Education which include but are not limited to:

  • low-income

  • rural living

  • low birth weight

  • language immaturity

We believe that the parent is the child's first and most important teacher!!

In the operation of the Child Care Food Program, no child will be discriminated against because of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. Any person who believes that he or she has been discriminated against in any USDA related activity should write immediately to the Secretary of Agriculture, Washington, DC 20250.
